Women Entrepreneurs Here’s How To Go Get Your Own Chips You wouldn’t show up to the poker table without a proper stack of chips, right? Without them, you’d be rendered pretty much worthless as a player of value. Your chips are essentially your currency. In fact, it’s said that in the 19th century and prior, players would use any small valuable objects in their possession, such as  used jagged gold pieces, gold nuggets, gold dust or coins. And up until today, no matter how you slice it, your chips are what allow you to stay inâ€"and ideallyâ€"win the game. Think of your chips as  business ideas for women entrepreneurs. So, when  I was told to “go get my own chips” by one of her billionaire bosses, I knew right away that to stay in the game of true self-reliance, Id have to make some radical moves. Like many, during the early part of my career I was wowed by the glitz and glam of working for high-profile individuals at  large corporations. But something key was missingâ€"and that something happened to be precisely what my employer was suggesting. What he meant when he told me to get my own chips was that, despite my success and accomplishments, it was high time for me to  have something of my own. Redefining Stability While having a job seems like a sound, reasonable endeavor to have checked off on your list of life priorities, at the end of the day no paycheck can really compete with actually owning something of your own. Why? Because ownership gives you control. It forces you to use another dimension of your brain. And it asks you to be present in an entirely new way. It places you squarely in the driver’s seat, which granted, can feel insanely dauntingâ€"but it can also be mind-opening, liberating and empowering on levels that no job might. As an Employee You Learn, but as an Owner You Flourish We know it’s easier said than done, as we’ve all heard the adage, “it takes money to make money.” Sometimes, to “get chips” you need capital, which isn’t something that everyone has access to, or even knows how to approach. We get it. It’s a process and we certainly don’t mean to oversimplify that piece of it. That said, we still encourage you to start  thinking  about all the various ways you can get your own chipsâ€"from working on your  side-hustle  while you keep your day-job, to dropping everything to focus on your new invention or startup. There’s a wide spectrum here, and each and every one of you can find your place on it at different stages of your lives. But it definitely starts with your mindset. Do You Want to Really Play the Game? Or Do You Just Want to Watch as the Others Take Their Wins? You want to win. We know you do. You want to control your financial destiny, not just for your own sake, but so you can truly provide for your families. To not only create an environment of abundance for those you love, but just as importantly, to serve as a role model for them, showing them that having a stake in the ground matters; and that paving your own road is far more worthwhile than walking someone else’s path. So, with all that in mind, here’s a bunch of different business ideas for women entrepreneurs. We invite you to be unapologetic, intent and creative as you get your own chips!      Dare to Disrupt “Disrupt” is the new “innovate.” Spotify disrupted the music industry; Airbnb disrupted the hotel industry; Lyft and Uber disrupted the taxi industryâ€"you get the point. Millennials, such as  Denise Hewett, founder of  Scriptd, know that thanks to the sharing economy, the sky’s the limit when it comes to shaking up old paradigms to come up with something lucrative that’s new.      Go From Hobbyist to Expert Hobbies or passion projects can often be seeds you’re planting for a bigger picture. It’s all about being willing to go from “something I do on the weekends to blow off steam” to really refining your expertise. If you love to bake, for example, why not take a serious pastry course? Who knows, maybe a year from now you can own your own patisserie.      Invent Something You all saw the film  Joy, right? If not, consider it mandatory SELF MADE homework. Inventionsâ€"like the famous self-squeezing mop Joy Mangano designed after she cut her hands mopping up a pile of broken glassâ€"often arise from necessity. So, as you move through your own day-to-day, keep your eyes open and your intuition on. You never know when the light bulb will go off.      Buy a Franchise I often say that if she could do it all over again she would buy Franchises. The franchise route is ideal, as I say in SELF MADE, for someone who may not see themselves as a creator type, but has great execution skills. A franchise is a great way to start a business with less investment, and with the know-how and the marketing support of other owners and the parent corporation behind you.      Sell Stuff Online The Internet is basically an at-your-fingertips-marketplace. You can sell stuff you own, stuff you make, or even use it to sell different kinds of services. It’s just a question of getting acquainted with sites such as eBay, which by the way, offers courses on how to use it for those of you who feel intimidated. Try doing it for one hour per week, if for no other reason than to flex your entrepreneurial muscle.      Partner with a Friend or Relative Have you and your sister or girlfriend ever fantasized about going in on something together? Stop fantasizing and start doing! Teamwork is a beautiful thing and as we all know, there is great strength in numbers. Get out there together; divide and conquer!      Invest in Real Estate When it comes to smart investing, cue my famous mantra  Don’t Buy Shoes, Buy Buildings. I consistently encourages women to make less instant-gratification-buys and focus more on the big picture investments, such as  buildings, which will ultimately liberate you financially.      Milk an Emerging Opportunity Think of emerging opportunities as low-hanging fruit. Such opportunities exist all around usâ€"your job is to stay attuned and keep your radar up for one that makes sense for you. If you’re a foodie, for example, and you read that, say, hummus is increasingly popular, maybe open up a hummus truck! All you need is chickpeas and a little gumption.      Look for a Business to Buy Businesses are like cars. Someone somewhere is always selling one. Why not explore your community (start with your local chamber of commerce) and see what’s on the market? Much like a franchise, an existing business has built-in features, such as clientele, so that as you develop the business further, you can at least cross that initial legwork off your list.      Find Hidden Money This is the secret sauce. As I write in SELF MADE, there is so much hidden money in America for women, and particularly women of color. There is an abundance of opportunitiesâ€"but sadly, a lack of information. Unfortunately many people work very hard at trying to build business, but when in person, they wind up destroying what they built. They are unaware that working together so much more may be achieved. All sound relationships are built on team effort whether 1:1 or in large groups. This includes how we promote and support one another, and how we balance listening and talking. Even when you are trying to sell, the best first steps are to listen first, and then question what you heard. This ensures you understand the exact meaning of the other person plus provides insight to their thinking. These steps enable you to speak to their interests and increase your likelihood of gaining increased interest in what you have to offer. The perfect example of how some people hurt their effort was exhibited in a recent meeting. Our speaker was illustrating how our conscious and subconscious minds are sometimes in conflict but when we resolve to keep them in balance, we do better. She stopped and asked for volunteers to say what they were thinking as she uttered her last sentence. One of the attendees, “Mary”, said, “I was thinking about a new dress I saw and want to buy.” What?! Mary was so into her own world, she showed no forethought that we were there to listen to the speaker. Mary made it clear her priorities differed and held more importance. After the speaker concluded, we realized Mary had come to promote her new and expensive program. She assumed this would be a ready audience that would buy seats. However, given Mary’s display of disregard for the speaker, there wasn’t as much interest in her new project as she had presumed. The better business model is about balance, respect, and building relationships wherever you go. Demonstrating you are a team player will draw positive attention to you and your business. Reciprocity is a big piece of business, social grace, and building community. From different perspectives, reciprocity may be seen as business development, marketing, branding and pre-negotiation strategy. Social media adheres to these rules too. When you see people tweeting messages you like and who Retweet you, take the time to see who they are and consider following them in return. If you like their tweets, retweet them and consider including their name in a Follow Friday list. When individuals post favorable comments on your pages, the right thing to do is thank them and then visit their page to post a nice note there. A quiet leadership style is to observe everything in your presence contributing to the moment in time. Using all of your senses determine whether the person standing in front of you, the venue itself, or the possible collaboration mentioned are a good match for you personally and professionally. The Seemingly Impossible Jobs â€" Cold Calling for Jobs The Seemingly Impossible Job Search â€" Cold Calling for Jobs There are three variations of “cold calls job opportunities that you may believe are too hard to get: You see a job advertised but don’t know anybody at that company. You see a job advertised and you know someone at that company (not the hiring manager). You know someone who works at a target company you want to work for, but you don’t know if there are any positions available. Don’t give up or talk yourself out of getting these jobs. In either of the above scenarios, add these as prospects in your job search pipeline. Example: write “GE in Boston” as a line item. Or “marketing manager at ABC Company advertised on Monster.com” as a line item. Don’t ignore them simply because they appear to be long shots . Here are some tricks to help you approach the jobs that require cold calling. 1. If you know anybody at that company, DO contact them via phone/voicemail then an immediate e-mail and ask them if you can use them as either a (1) referral â€" that they simply referred you to someone, or a (2) reference â€" where they will be a spokesperson and can represent your skills and fit for the position or company. There is a distinction. Scenario and Sample: You know someone within the company you are applying to and you want to put their name as a reference or referral in the first line of your cover letter. “ John, you and I worked together 4 years ago at Company XYZ. I’m sorry we have not been in touch since then. I need your help, John. I am now applying for an x position at company and would like to put your name in the cover letter as a reference or referral. If you are contacted, I would like you to highlight my skills around skill 1, skill 2 and skill 3. I am passionate about the position and believe I am a very strong fit to what the hiring manager is looking for.” DON’T use someone’s name without contacting them as it can backfire. This happened to me on a job search. The person, who I assumed would be a referral, declined. He only worked with me in one type of job and he didn’t believe he could talk about my skills needed for a entirely different position 4 years later. I didn’t get the final interview. 2. If you don’t know anybody at your target company, DO try to get a name of someone who can forward your application to the hiring manager. It is always better to send your e-mail to someone directly and put their name in the “to” line. If you have a network contact (LinkedIn) within the company, try to call or e-mail them first with a short request that they forward your credentials to someone else in their company. Go online and do hours of research into the companies that you are targeting. Try to find a contact name instead of just sending your resume to Human Resources. If you must, call the company and ask for a contact person in H/R or Recruiting who is handling your particular job opening. DO use the web to find a good contact name and try to get their e-mail. Spend hours on that company’s web site, reading the organization section, speeches, announcements, press releases. Then, naturally, spend hours on the rest of the web. Call the receptionist to confirm that person is still in that role or at that company. DO also apply to the position you want via that company’s instructions (career site, online submittal tool). When Im contacted to help somebody get into my company, the first questions I ask are: A. Have you done research and found job opportunities on my companys website? B. Have you applied to the position(s) you are seeking? Scenario and Sample: Sending an application package (Cover letter and resume) to a marketing manager for your request to interview for an engineering position. “Dear Mr. Marketing real name here, you and I met at situation here and I am writing to ask for your help. I am passionate about applying to the posted position # _________ as Lead Programmer, and I would like to ask you to forward this e-mail directly to the Engineering hiring manager”. DON’T send a letter to “Dear Human Resources” if at all possible. I realize that is where some websites send you. Odds are low it will be looked at. They are good people; they simply are not the buyer. DON’T expect a response to every job you apply to. I hear too many people whine that “Company XYZ didn’t even get back to me”. They don’t have to and they can’t. It’s not college where you can expect an acceptance or rejection letter. DON’T send a “lazy” letter, even if you know the recipient very well. Here is an example of a communication that will reach the deleted box instantly: From: John Smith To: Sally Jones Subject: Marketing Manager Dear Sally, Hope you are doing well. I noticed the vacant role of Marketing Manager in the Consumer division who will help to drive the Partner Marketing and I am interested in pursuing it. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, first name only no phone or e-mail no attachment DON’T use social networking website e-mail capabilities to pursue a position, refer someone else for the position, etc. I am an avid LinkedIn user, but I don’t want a job search candidate to send me a short cover letter through LinkedIn. Best is to describe your job search goal (short version) and why you are contacting that person. The request should be “may I have your e-mail address to send you more information? Remember, every communication, even to a network contact, will make an impression. You are always interviewing and need to use the best form, best grammar and maximum clarity in a concise way.
